Community proposal: To establish as official policy, subject to amendment at Test Wiki:Community portal, No open proxies policy. Such policy shall prohibit open proxies, somewhat broadly construed, VPNs, and web hosts from being used for anonymous editing or account creation. On discovery, a Steward shall soft block with account creation disabled and talk page access revoked said IP range(s) for a period of not less than three (3) and not more than twenty four (24) months. Logged in editors may use them, as is the case on Miraheze, as at least the user will have been likely required to identify their personal IP to create an account. Where, upon discovery, an account was created by a VPN/open proxy, Steward discretion applies as to whether to block, or require a confirmation edit from a Wikimedia or Miraheze wiki. Steward discretion in terms of the length of the block/rangeblock applies, within the defined parameters, but the community recomments at least six (6) months for obvious cases. Where open proxies/VPNs are being used on this wiki by anonymous users, the open proxies/VPNs may be blocked by any <code>sysop</code>, subject to the same discretion as outlined above.

: Oppose Thank you, Trayfel, for the properly formatted confirmation edit of your Trayfel account on Wikimedia (though you should still confirm your account on Miraheze as well (especially if it's the same username as on here). Nonetheless, I thank Trayfel for putting their name forward for Stewardship; unfortunately and regrettably, I must oppose this (and not a weak oppose, per the articulated reason). For one thing, your account is barely two months old. Account age, on its own, is not necessarily a prerequisite, but taken together with your confirmed Wikimedia global account having only ~300 global edits in the past twelve months since it's been created, almost all of which are either (a) userspace sandbox edits and/or (b) counter-vandalism remediation on English Wikipedia, I am unable to ascertain your overall technical ability. Additionally, and perhaps more crucially, you have zero (0) patrol log entries on Test Wiki, only three (3) user rights log entries, one of which was an incorrect interpretation of the inactivity policy and correctly overturned by PorkchopGMX. Granted, I will say that Test Wiki:Inactivity policy is, admittedly, a bit unclear, but nevertheless, the preceding in a manner the user thought they were certain they were correct when they were not is at least a bit problematic. Other than a few test blocks, there's really no other edits and log actions to assess the user's understanding of, and ability to apply, our policies, so I am unable to get any real clear sense of that. Finally, the user identified wanting to assist MacFan4000 and I with user renames and checking for sockpuppetry. In terms of the former, there have been only fifteen (15) renames in the preceding six (6) calendar years and, seeing as I have only had to add my <code>checkuser</code> hat in the more than one month since I've been a Steward and since I am also active daily here, in terms of daily review of the community portal, permission requests, and recent changes, I don't feel there's a sufficient rationale here either. It'd potentially be, if I had a better sense of the user's technical and policy-based abilities. Finally, I noted that you've only very recently joined our IRC channel, which I'd also like to have seen you be more active as well. You no doubt seem helpful and constructive, but nevertheless and, as such, this is, as I say, regrettably, at least a bit too soon. ::The outcome here is that, yes, Seiyena's behaviour was indeed inappropriate, and the racially insensitive and homophobic comments also inappropriate, Kazrok4545's block was also inappropriate for a few reasons. Firstly, as it was quite clear at Test Wiki:Request permissions that this was a Steward-managed user conduct case, the block was inappropriate. Secondly, administrators here are, fundamentally, non-test administrators. Blocking open proxies, deleting spam, or reverting vandalism is fine, but serious user conduct issues must be left to Stewards, unless they've explicitly delegated certain aspects (i.e., my saying that <code>bureaucrat</code> could be revoked if the conditions were breached, for example). Finally, and philosophically, part of developing good administrator skills beyond technical capability is developing the diplomatic skills and engaging with users to think of other, creative and, crucially, long-term solutions that are at least somewhat amenable to all. I had meant to ask Arcversin to import the abuse filter from Public Test Wiki, but my other responsibilities precluded that until now, so I do take that responsibility for not having done that sooner. Nevertheless, this is the solution I believe is the best. If, after a month or so (from now), it's clear Seiyena needs another time away from Test Wiki, I will make that call. Nevertheless, Seiyena, to be clear, you can curse, though I encourage you not to. What you cannot do is make racist, racially insensitive, xenophobic, or homophobic comments. Thus, Kazrok4545's rights revocation is endorsed by this Steward. You may re-apply for administrator after a minimum of 5-7 days, if a bureaucrat is satisfied with your good edits and log actions. You may then re-apply for bureaucrat on or after May 1st, again under the same terms. I have added several minor user groups, with a particular emphasis on <code>researcher</code>, which should allow you review your revision deleted contributions and log actions, to help you understand what you cannot do here and make good edits. Together with Arcversin's abuse filter, hopefully this should guide you to constructive editing here. Dmehus (talk) 03:50, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

:Arcversin, sure. My other plan here is to create a non-test abuse filter helpers user group, to be granted by Stewards, that would allow technically capable abuse filter editors to be granted this permission and be able to edit restricted abuse filters. Users may request the permission from a Steward, but should provide some evidence of technical capability in this area. It would be subject to the inactivity policy, and could be revoked if an abuse filter helper either (a) repeatedly made unconstructive changes to restricted abuse filters or (b) otherwise demonstrated to Stewards they either (i) not technically competent or (ii) not trusted. Oversight role?

@MacFan4000 and Void: Do you think it'd be possible to get an oversight role? Seemplez (talk) 14:15, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

@Seemplez: I'm just gonna bump in here, but there's no need for it right now. From what I've seen, everything is fine, and the CheckUser right isn't really needed either, the only use for the Steward permission is that it can revoke bureaucrat permissions from a user. BlackWidowMovie0 (talk) 17:29, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
I think we already have both kinds of oversight on this wiki, from google I saw https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/oversight which is revision deletion you should already be able to do the admin kind of revision deletion, there is also the suppress kind, which was done to a few entries a long time ago by MacFan4000, but for that you need to be in the suppress user group and only the stewards can assign that. Fast - ZoomZoom (talk) 18:14, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
If a steward thinks you should have it, and assigns it to you, or you become a steward, then yes. Otherwise, no. Justarandomamerican (talk) 23:09, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
@Fast, Justarandomamerican, and BlackWidowMovie0: Thanks. Seemplez (talk) 11:29, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Spam abuse filters

I'd like to propose that we enable automatic blocking on our anti-spam abuse filters, as they have a rare false positive rate (and we can just unblock if there is a false positive). Justarandomamerican (talk) 17:51, 26 December 2020 (UTC)

Support I Do think we could use filter for that. --Cocopuff2018 (talk) 18:51, 26 December 2020 (UTC)

Good idea, I had considered proposing this for a while but had never got around to it. Blocking is a restricted action though, so this will need to be closed by a stewards. Naleksuh (talk) 23:28, 26 December 2020 (UTC)
We also need it because there is no way in hell I am doing this again. Naleksuh (talk) 00:10, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
Geez, I normally mop up the mess the spambots make, and never have I had to give myself the bot flag, nor flood the log like that. Justarandomamerican (talk) 01:49, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
Agree, and prompt autoblocks will also prevent the spambots from creating new accounts on the same IP for 24 hours reducing the hit rate and making it easier to find any false positives. We can always tweak the filters that result in immediate blocks if problems occur. It may be advisable to limit blocks only to registered accounts for now since they are so far responsible for nearly all edits that trip the filter. Fast - ZoomZoom (talk) 23:15, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

It looks like we had another Hell load of Bot accounts today and don't worry Nalekshu I can always do mass blocking if you need me to or want me to do it just Message me and I'll do it 🙂 --Cocopuff2018 (talk) 04:43, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Help, abuse filter blocked me

Hi, this is administrator User:PorkchopGMX editing under a VPN, a different browser, and a new account. I was editing one of my subpages, planning to delete it and use my test account to see what it would look like with the “researcher” user group, when the abuse filter thought I was spamming and blocked me indefinitely with autoblock. The only thing I can do right now (besides having to use a VPN) is to email somebody. I don’t know who I should email, so I’m doing this instead. If anybody is skeptical that this is really me, I do have access to my account and can email somebody if they need proof. PorkchopGMX’s throwaway account that will only be used once (talk) 16:15, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello i already unblocked your main account please Do not use a Vpn i will GO ahead and Unblock your ip aswell so you can edit --Cocopuff2018 (talk) 16:22, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Thank you Cocopuff2018, I’m unblocked now. PorkchopGMX (talk) 16:43, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Proposal : Remove SocialProfile

"High chance of spam" filters and false positives

The spam filters have recently falsely blocked two users (User:PorkchopGMX and User:Dmehus) as spammers that were not. As a temporary solution User:MacFan4000 has set them to just disallow again, but they clearly need to block provided we can remove false positives.

I suggest requiring 0 edits for block. Generally spambots trip this filter on their first edit, so anyone who has made any successful edits is likely not a spambot. Any other ideas? Naleksuh (talk) 23:41, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

The filter should also require the creation of a new page. It already does for one of the filters, but it should for the other too. Naleksuh (talk) 23:43, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
I'm a bit confused, perhaps. Wouldn't requiring 0 edits to block increase the false positive blocks? Administrators are active here, and can revert spam quickly. I'd suggest just setting it to either warn or disallow permanently, with anyone with autopatrol in their user_rights exempted from the filter. Dmehus (talk) 23:46, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
I don't think so. Most administrators have more than 1 edit. I support requiring 0 edits. Justarandomamerican (talk) 23:59, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
@Dmehus: How would narrowing when blocks are placed increase false positives? Naleksuh (talk) 00:00, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
Well, in my case, I only had one edit, and maybe I'm not understanding the central idea idea, but wouldn't reducing the edit requirement mean I would've been blocked when I made my permission request? Note that I never tried to add an external link—it was just an interwiki link. Dmehus (talk) 00:06, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
No, because your permissions request didn’t contain anything that would trip the filter. Also, I just tested that change, and it doesn’t work because most spambots are seeming to first make a change to their SocialProfile, which I guess counts as an edit. Or at least & user_editcount == 0 nothing trips the filter when I test it. MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 13:35, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
Oh, okay, well, I suppose it doesn't hurt to try it then, since you've tested the filter against recent edits. Plus, yeah, spam only accounts do tend add spammy links into their social profiles. Having said that, on some wikis on Miraheze what we do is simply add the SocialProfile-related rights to autoconfirmed, and that stops the spam only accounts cold, with minimal impacts on legitimate users. Also, if the above community proposal passes, this may end up being moot. Dmehus (talk) 15:57, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
If the above community proposal fails, I support moving updateprofile into autoconfirmed. Justarandomamerican (talk) 16:34, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Restriction of Administrator rights

Hello everyone I want to explain something important to the community, it's about verification and Users who should or shouldn't have the right of admin, as for testing we already know this is a Test wiki where you can Test administrator actions, I would like to ask should we recklessly give Admin and bureaucrat right to anyone without confirming if they're Known users on Wikipedia?, I think we should ask them to confirm their account on Meta to know whether they get to benefit from using MediaWiki Tools or just for Fun. what do you think?

Thanks 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (talk) 17:26, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

It's fine to enable it, especially if it's already enabled in another prefix. Generally the concern with enabling "forward" is whether the site is trusted enough to assume it's not going to be hosting phishing attacks. — Arcversin (talk) 13:19, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, though this exceeds my level of JS scripting expertise, this seems reasonable and, looking at your code, there does not seem to be any potential issues. As such, I've
done this request for you. However, I'd like Arcversin to take a second look, though, making any tweaks/revisions, as required. Also, I know I've asked you to confirm your Miraheze account on Wikimedia, but can you also provide a Wikimedia confirmation edit for your Test Wiki account? Thanks. :) Dmehus (talk) 22:48, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: @Dmehus: Looking over the new script, it's fine, however there are a few small mistakes in terms of compatibility. MediaWiki only supports ECMAScript 5 (as opposed to 6) in most places (notably, this does not apply to scripts loaded directly from a URL), which means that you need to use the var keyword instead of let, which I've fixed. Also, making use of mw.Api requires that a dependency on mediawiki.api be added in MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition, which has been done. Apart from that, the code works quite well. Do note that it would need an update should TestWiki grow to >500 sysops. — Arcversin (talk) 01:59, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Inactivity policy

Hello, can you see User talk:Startus#Removal of bureaucrat.? Thanks! AlPaD (talk) 11:44, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

AlPaD, thank you for your question. Your understanding of Test Wiki:Inactivity policy is the same as mine. Specifically, the one-hour rights readdition clause only applies to Stewards and System Administrators, ostensibly chiefly because those roles require a successful community vote at Test Wiki:Community portal. As to whether someone must wait the standard hold period before readding bureaucrat, I'd say your understanding is also likely correct, but it's also common sense. Provided someone didn't lose their bureaucrat bit for cause or otherwise resign under a cloud of scrutiny, that seems fine. Hope that helps. Dmehus (talk) 03:01, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I just have one question. If a bureaucrat or admin sees someone making both good edits but also bad ones what do we do if they don't stop after we warn them? Should we try to alert a Steward as soon as possible and just clean up after them until a Steward can handle the situation? I think that maybe giving a short-term block (like one day) might be reasonable while waiting for a steward, just to stop active disruption until the situation can be handled properly. Just wanted to know in case a situation like this comes up again.

Filter #52

@Dmehus: Could you or another Steward please add & page_id == 702 to abuse filter 52, as the second to last line? This would help prevent false positives (which result in no-warning indef blocks) by excluding Test Wiki:Request for permissions from said filter. Also, is there any way for non-Stewards to get edit access to those filters? — Arcversin (talk) 01:29, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Arcversin, sure. Anyone have any objections to this? Dmehus (talk) 04:02, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
@Dmehus: Not sure how, but I mistyped what should be added, it should be != not ==. As to your latter point, I would support that idea , but I would suggest it be named something other than "helpers", since Wikimedia uses that to refer to read-only access to private filters. — Arcversin (talk) 11:15, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
