CheckUser[edit]

Just wondering if there is a time requirement before I can apply for Bureaucrat, I wanted to test the check user feature on myself but the right is just listed as "requesters must first be an administrator". So should I just reapply now? Thanks Terasail 22:31, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Terasail: I've heard 30 days somewhere, but can't find it now. However, you should be able to use the CheckUser tool as an administrator although you will only be able to check yourself. Naleksuh (talk) 22:39, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Naleksuh: Ah thanks. Although I don't think I can since I don't see any way to do it & Test Wiki:CheckUser states that Bureaucrats are the only ones who can test on themselves as well as IWI stating the same thing here. Terasail 22:46, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, it does seem that only bureaucrats may use the CheckUser tool. I will go ahead and set you as a bureaucrat, however it may be a good idea to grant administrators access to it. Naleksuh (talk) 22:48, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, it would probably make more sense if admins could check themselves on this wiki. Terasail 22:55, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
PMJI, but in recent weeks rule of thumb has been, 24 hours plus at least 2-3 edits after the flag is added plus a request, then check to see that there's been no disruption, if all the boxes are checked grant the flag. I'm not saying that's the right answer, but the archives also show a similar pattern. Honestly, we probably should formalize the procedure somewhere, but given that no problems or arguments have resulted so far it's not exactly urgent. About page deleting[edit]

After i am done Testing do i have to delete the page or can i leave it? --Cocopuff2018 (talk) 17:09, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Cocopuff2018:Generally pages you created for testing purposes should be deleted once the test is done. There are a few specific case-by-case exceptions though. Naleksuh (talk) 20:21, 20 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Recent blocks[edit]

Just as a heads up (and a courtesy ping to Justarandomamerican), I did a quick check on 144.76.99.123 to get the range since the user subsequently jumped to 144.76.195.51 (blocked by the abuse filter) calculated range is a /16, which agrees with what RIPE is showing as the allocated CIDR (link) and whatismyipaddress has already identified this (and hence the entire range) as an open proxy (link).

Since anyone who uses the proxy can jump between 65k IP addresses in the range, any blocks or unblocks on individual IP addresses are essentially wastes of time. The default LocalSettings.php setup will (just barely) allow a large enough rangeblock if needed however (see mw:Manual:$wgBlockCIDRLimit).

I have opted against doing so for the moment as this involved a total of two edits one of which was prevented by the abuse filter, and I'm sympathetic to the idea that some users who edit from work or from some of the less free areas of the world may have justifiable reason for editing through proxies. However if disruption becomes sustained any block that does not include the whole /16 will be ineffective. Best, Fast - ZoomZoom (talk) 23:26, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
